What is a Mommy Makeover?

Cosmetic surgeons have developed a combination of cosmetic surgeries called a "mommy makeover"; these procedures are designed to enhance a woman's figure after childbearing is complete. Mommy makeovers, when properly executed by trained plastic surgeons, can address some of the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding on a woman's body, especially on her breasts and abdominal area. A tummy tuck and breast surgery (such as a lift, augmentation or combination lift/augmentation with saline or silicone implants) are generally performed as part of the mommy makeover. Unwanted deposits of fat can also be dealt with by employing liposuction as part of the makeover procedures.

Reasons to Get a Mommy Makeover

A woman's body changes, sometimes very drastically, after pregnancy. Diet and exercise may not be enough to reduce certain unpleasant effects of motherhood on the body; in these cases, a mommy makeover may be a viable option. Even mothers who had their last child several years ago may be candidates for mommy makeover surgery.

Breast Lift and Augmentation Procedures

It is common for women to be unhappy with the breast changes that may occur after pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Breast changes can be addressed with a variety of surgeries including augmentation, lift, and breast reduction, or a combination of those. Fluctuations in breast size that can occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding often result in sagging, or ptosis. These can be corrected with breast lift surgery. Doctors may even be able to use a patient's own tissue to create volume in the breasts during a breast lift, since deflated, floppy breasts are one of the top complaints women bring to plastic surgeons.

Tummy Tuck

Pregnancy, with its stretching of skin and muscle in the abdomen, can often leave mothers with a soft, loose and distended "pot belly" that can be difficult to correct with diet and exercise alone. Mommy makeovers usually contain a tummy tuck procedure, also known as abdominoplasty, during which excess skin is removed and the underlying abdominal muscles are tightened to create a flatter, firmer abdomen.

Two Procedures, One Surgery

Candidates for a mommy makeover may want to discuss with their surgeons whether or not they are healthy enough to have both a breast surgery and an abdominoplasty performed in a single surgery. A woman's risk is lowered by combining surgeries as she will only have to undergo general anesthesia once, and her body will only need to recover from one surgery instead of two.

Why This Surgery is Beneficial for Mothers

Mothers often tend to disregard their own personal fulfillment in favor of taking care of the needs of their families. A woman's self esteem can be dramatically enhanced by a mommy makeover. Today's surgical techniques also create excellent results with shorter recovery periods, allowing mothers to quickly return to their lives and their families after doing something for themselves.
